Sins of the Past is campaign IV. It takes place in Phoena, a country in Teresis in Marillia.

Campaign Diaries

Session 1

Date: 16 August 2021

The campaign started 15 days after the end of the Eighth Occaria. The party learned that yesterday, Ina Sukarian, the Oracle of the Sanctuary, was assassinated in Liore allegedly by a group of nationalists. Celebrations exploded in the city of Lozanre, Phoena, when news of this arrived.

The party met with Lord Adul Assanti, Lord Raysh, and Prince Hakir for a mission: to infiltrate the city of Marnova and rescue its population of Lucians. Raysh explained that when peace negotiations began a few weeks ago (to end the Eighth Occaria), the Casiric Church in Marnova overthrew the city's government, intending to prolong the war. The king received word that the Casirists intend to sacrifice the Lucians in a ritual they believe will turn the tide of the war.

Raysh fears that if the Casirists succeed in killing the Lucians, the Sanctuary may retaliate. In the best case scenario, Alicante will issue harsher demands to Phoena. In the worst case scenario, Alicante will re-ignite war.

The party agreed, and looked for a friend of Vedi, Kido al-Resiri, to get them into Marnova. Kido is a member of the Reshiga, and wasn't supposed to let anyone into the lodge today, but he was persuaded to make an exception. However, this proved to be fatal, as a group of Burja warlocks broke in and killed several Reshiga mages before the party managed to escape through a portal.

Session 2

The party landed in Marnova but in the wrong location: they appeared in a random house. They had to find a way out. Then they ran to the church where the Lucians were meant to be. They saw the city in ruins as Raysh's forces (alongside some Alicantians) lay siege to the city.

The party found the church emptied, and met a high-ranking Casiric priest named Yadeen Azaro: Sorhan's right-hand man. Azaro explained Sorhan had taken the Lucians to the temple and betrayed him, since apparently the ritual to Casir required "three betrayals."

Session 3

Date: ?

The party made it to the temple, where the party witnessed Sorhan beginning the ritual to Casir. Nico then revealed he was the son of Sorhan and had come to kill his father (in retribution for Sorhan killing Nico's mother). He then summoned a balor to interrupt the ritual.

Raysh swept in at the last moment and impaled Sorhan. However, once he took off "Sorhan's" mask, Raysh realized it was not Sorhan but an imposter. Then Raysh completed the ritual by betraying the party. He slaughtered the Lucians and witnessed a vision from Casir.

Session 4

Date: ?

The party fled to some woods nearby. Raysh fled, taking Randy and Empire with him. The city fell into chaos as the Kingslayer went on a rampage.

The party then met three travelers: Grez, Gleg, and Noeg.

Session 5

Date: ?

The party bypassed the Alicantian-Phoenic border by traversing the Seyjal, a mystical forest with vast local superstition surrounding it. Two of the party members lost their names but then got them back.

They arrived in Lozanre relatively unscathed.

Session 6

Date: ?

A shopping episode. The party split, with half going to St. Malgram's Cathedral to speak with Mother Superior Anastasia. The rest of the party went to the Bazaar Royale to purchase some goods. They then camped outside Lozanre and intended to head to Rodessa, a city to the north, where hopefully Raysh would not be able to find them.

Session 7

Date: 3 November 2021

The party journeyed north of Lozanre towards Rodessa. They were intercepted by two mages—Rayyan Tahir and Neri—who confronted them about the ritual at Marnova. Nym then fired an arrow at Rayyan, instigating a fight, at the end of which Rayyan was killed. Neri then summoned several dretches, and the session ended.

Session 8

Date: 7 November 2021

The party finished the fight with Neri. They killed the dretches but were unable to find Neri, who presumably escaped. They then chopped Rayyan's body into pieces, burnt it to a crisp, and scattered the ashes in a nearby river.

The party then had a large fight that almost resulted in a schism, but they decided to stick together and head back south to Lozanre. They found the city under quarantine and had to sneak in disguised.

They retired at the Falls Inn, courtesy of some of Grez's colleagues. Nym got laid and the party went to sleep.

Session 9

Date: 21 November 2021

About 15 minutes after everyone retired, Nym gave a blood-curdling scream. It turned out his brother (who'd been hunting him) impaled him through the chest and burst out the window. Nym nearly bled out but was saved by Nigel.

The next morning, the party split into two groups, half going to the Bazaar Royale to purchase some disguises, and half staying at the inn to explore the hole. The latter group journeyed down the hole and discovered a portal leading to presumably another plane, where they met a quirky humanoid female who seemed to try and steal the party's names.

Session 10

Date: 28 November 2021

The party split into three groups. Niraya went and freed his slaves; Nym went to go buy more healing potions; and Vedi and Nigel went to go speak with Mother Superior Anastasia. Vedi learned that apparently Alicante has informed Phoena that they will not be taking any Lucian girls as part of the 1500 they demanded in the search for the next oracle—and that this has caused a great deal of tension in Lozanre, since it seems to be a political move on Alicante's part. They also learned that most of the girls who are taken by Alicante never return home.

The party then learned that Kido had apparently been captured and was being brutally interrogated in a town square nearby. They rushed there to find a huge crowd cheering on Captain Jassin of the city guard beating Kido bloody. They also saw tons of guards scanning the crowd, and some guards marching through, telling people to take down their hoods and show their faces.

A hooded figure then passed a note to Vedi with the words "TRAP. RUN." He whispered, "Pig's Den" (a nearby tavern). The party then followed, and saw that the hooded figure was Kido, who explained that the interrogation was a trap to lure the party out.

Date: 30 March 2022

The party heard a Casirist proclaim that Sorhan was alive, was a prophet of Casir, was in Lozanre, and would appear tonight. They entered the palace and spent several hours trying to figure out which princess was pregnant. All the while, they met some guests, including:

  • Lord Randle Reyner, a Phoenic nobleman and a powerful magi
  • Lord Hatoul, a Phoenic lord and a bit of a drunkard
  • Lord Greymark, a minor Phoenic lord
  • Lord Antoine Moreau, a high-ranking member of the Sanctuary
  • King Jassar's master alchemist
  • Lord Descalo, ambassador from Alicante
  • Lord Raven, spymaster of Alicante and a member of the Cere

The party found out:

  • Yerra, the party animal of the three, was trying to obtain some moon tea (i.e., Plan B), but this turned out to be for a friend of hers.
  • Sehina is gay.
  • Avaria, the goody-two-shoes of the three, had gotten pregnant after a tryst with her secret lover, a serving boy named Vatil.

Raysh, too, found out that last one: he coaxed a drunk Lord Hatoul to announce the pregnancy, and then observed how each of his nieces reacted. As all this was happening, an airship was hurling towards the palace. As it pulled right up to the ballroom, Raysh impaled his niece through the belly with a black blade. Immediately after, the airship opened fire on the ballroom, slaughtering the guests inside.

Session 13

Date: 13 April 2022

A fight broke out as Sorhan and his goons swooped in from the ship, indicating that the ship was being piloted by Casirists under Sorhan's command. Sorhan focused on trying to kill Alicantians, perhaps in an attempt to ignite a war between Alicante and Phoena.

Princess Avaria lay dead and the party tried killing Raysh, but Raysh vanished. The party then tried to escape. Lord Greymark told the party to come upstairs; he vanished and began performing a teleportation spell in a room upstairs.

The Casirists began slaughtering people, and soon Yadeen Azaro showed up, with the sign of the Lucianus emblazoned on his right hand. He dueled Sorhan, with help from Raven and the party. Eventually, Sorhan was felled, and Yadeen pulled back the scarf over his face—revealing that this was not in fact Sorhan.

The party escaped the palace to Greymark's estate, where they began chatting with Greymark, who revealed that Mortzopholus had slaughtered his village as a young boy. Greymark now seeks to find Mortzopholus and kill him.
