A plane or plane of existence is a "world" or universe with its own properties and physical and metaphysical laws. They exist in the multiverse.
Many planes, though not all, are divided into layers, which can be thought of as sub-planes. The Nine Hells, as you can imagine, has nine layers, whereas Marillia has only one.
