Great Wheel
The Great Wheel is the most popular model of the cosmos.
According to the Great Wheel model, the material plane exists "in between" two vast cosmic "regions": the Inner Planes and the Outer Planes. The Inner Planes, connected to the material plane by the ethereal plane, are the worlds of raw elemental matter. The Outer Planes, connected to the material plane by the astral plane, are the worlds of spirit and mind.
Scholars who subscribe to the Great Wheel model propose that all the matter in the material plane is deposited into it from the Inner Planes, while spirit, mind, and soul are deposited into it from the Outer Planes.
Whether there is one material plane or many is a matter of debate, even among scholars who subscribe to the Great Wheel model.
