From Marillia
Nyarlathotep

(BUZZING VOICE)

. . . go out among men and find the ways thereof, that He in the Gulf may know. To Nyarlathotep, Mighty Messenger, must all things be told. And He shall put on the semblance of men, the waxen mask and the robe that hides, and come down from the world of Seven Suns to mock. . . .

—H. P. Lovecraft, The Whisperer in Darkness

Nyarlathotep is a being described in the notes of the pirate captain Jamit Angari, who seemed to believe Sorhan is a guise of Nyarlathotep.

The archdevil Azaphiel has heard of Nyarlathotep but seems not to believe he/it exists.

Pronunciation

Most commonly, Nyarlathotep is pronounced nyar-LAH-thoh-tep, but I pronounce it NYAR-lat-HOH-tep, as in 0:10 of this video. I believe the th in the name is not a consonant digraph but rather a consonant cluster, because hotep is an actual ancient Egyptian word, meaning "at rest, at peace."
