Scarcella, often called the Madman of the Woods, Scarcella the Madman, or simply the Madman, was a powerful and enigmatic arcanist. He was well known for his itinerant lifestyle, his eccentric personality, and his biting criticisms of various authorities. He spurned organized magical societies such as the Burja, and took few students; notable among them is Lord Greymark.

Scarcella is considered one of the more powerful arcanists in Phoenic history. He wrote little, but some of his students, such as Zal of Asra and Sazar "Saz" Sazya, wrote down many of his lectures.
