Past the eternal battleground of Avernus, first of the Nine Hells, and past the eternal and unbroken Runeferran, lies Dis, the second of the Nine Hells. Dis is a vast metropolis—one of the largest in the multiverse. It is a hub of trade and culture, where devils, evil jinn, yugoloths, tieflings, genasi, and many more live and work and trade.

It is said that the very surface of the Iron City, from the streets to the buildings, is forged of blazing hot iron. Roaring factories pierce the sky, blackening the sky with smoke and soot. From any vantage point in the city, it is said that the Iron Tower of Dispater is visible on the horizon.

Structure

Some scholars say the city of Dis is coterminous with the layer. Some even say the city is infinite. Abn-Azer disagrees: he says there are other realms in this layer; all are subordinate to Dis and Dispater, however.
