The Abyss is a Chaotic Evil plane and a multiverse-sized howling maelstrom of darkness and chaos. It is a malignant cosmic cancer swirling at the farthest reaches of reality, filled with with unspeakable horrors. Hungry and restless, it devours entire planes as if it were alive.
