The Casiric Church is a large, decentralized religious institution based in Phoena dedicated to the worship of Casir, the Phoenic god of the desert.
Although lawless, volatile, and tumultuous, like the Abyss there is, paradoxically, a strange semblance of order in the Church. It is structured as an extremely unstable pyramid topped by three high priests. Currently, the three are (in descending order of seniority): Mortzopholus, Sorhan, and Zehr.
Known members
- Maz Morin, one of Sorhan's three war chiefs and his second-in-command, having replaced Yadeen Azaro.
- Mortzopholus
- Rico Valenzo, one of Sorhan's three war chiefs. An Alicantian.
- Sorhan
- Thurik Zayhar, one of Sorhan's three war chiefs.
- Zehr
Leadership
Historically, the Church has been led by three high priests. This is not a rule; there is no official process for selecting a new high priest, nor for removing one. At times, more than three people have claimed to be high priests, and at other times, there have been fewer than three. One becomes high priest simply by being recognized as high priest. This often occurs by assassinating a current high priest or being recognized by another high priest or other major religious figure. For example, according to Nico, Sorhan became high priest by ritually murdering his own wife and thereby earning recognition from Mortzopholus.[1] Soon after, Casirists across Phoena recognized Sorhan's ascension, and his status was cemented when Salysa Aidani, Uma of the Hadina, recognized him.[2]
The current high priests are Mortzopholus, who is most senior and has been a high priest for decades; Sorhan, who became a high priest after assassinating Kithar and being recognized by Mortzopholus; and Zehr, who became high priest during the last years of the Eighth Occaria.
List of high priests
- Faywaz, executed in 454 by King Uthayn IV
- Rayman, a high priest during the Black Terror. Executed by King Jassar in 481.
- Kithar, the high priest preceding Sorhan. Assassinated by Sorhan and his followers in 482.
- Current: Mortzopholus, most senior of the current three
- Current: Sorhan, who became high priest circa the year 482
- Current: Zehr, who became high priest circa the year 492
