The '''Eighth Occaria''' (oh-KAR-ee-uh) was a massive intercontinental war fought from 485–494 between the Alicantian Empire and a coalition of opposition powers, including (but not limited to) [[Riyan]], [[Phoena]], [[Vallyra]], and [[Liore]]. With over two million soldiers mobilized at its peak, the Eighth Occaria was one of the largest wars in the history of man. Although the exact death toll is unknown, it is estimated to be between 4 and 8 million, most of them civilians in Phoena and Riyan.

After the Seventh Occaria, the Alicantian Empire and Riyan set up buffer states at their new borders—Armaisa under the Alicantians and Sarda under the Riyanis. Over the years, periodic border clashes between the two resulted in a handful of deaths, but in 484, a border dispute escalated until a Hestati unit of 500 soldiers, against orders, crossed into Sarda and rampaged across the countryside. Within a month, a Riyani army marched into Armaisa and began sieging its capital. In January of 485, with Riyan refusing to back down, Alicante sent a declaration of war.

After eleven months of drudgery, the Alicantians sought to open a second front. They began negotiations with Jakkur, Riyan's northern neighbor, but after a diplomatic blunder, the King of Jakkur executed the Alicantian emissary. Days later, Alicante invaded. It was at this time when Phoena, also a neighbor of Jakkur and an ally of Riyan, began mobilizing her armies. The Alicantians demanded Phoena stand down, to which Phoena did not respond. When the Jakkuris refused to allow Phoenic soldiers into her territory, Phoena's King Jassar stunned the world by invading Jakkur and storming its capital. Phoena sent a declaration of war to Alicante.

The war raged for nearly two more years when a multinational conference was organized in Penthia—the so-called Penthia Conference—to discuss what was to be done about Alicante's aggression. In attendance were dignitaries from Riyan and Phoena, as well as Vallyra, Liore, Genova, and Tyrelia.
