In the Lucianus, the oracle is the apostle of the Goddess. The oracle is a girl endowed with the Gift, granting her the ability to read the Legacies—a divine record of all knowledge in existence.

Oracles tend to have very short life expectancies. No one knows why, but it is commonly accepted that the Gift exacts a heavy toll on her, killing her in a matter of years. As such, oracles come and go, on average, every 8 years. Whenever one dies, the Sanctuary embarks on an international manhunt for the next one. Entire wars have been fought over girls believed to be the next oracle.

Compared to the matria

The oracle occupies an idiosyncratic position in the hierarchy of the Sanctuary. Believe it or not, the Sanctuary actually predates the first oracle; the office of the matria has existed longer than that of the oracle. The matria is the supreme ecclesiastical official of the Sanctuary, whereas the oracle is more prophet than priest.

There have been many oracles, but some of the more famous ones are:

• Yulei, the first oracle, who was discovered by Saint Valentus.
• Lyra, the oracle who led the Third Occaria
• Shina, a powerful oracle who led the Fourth Occaria
• Ina Sukarian, the most recent oracle, who led the Eighth Occaria. She was assassinated in Liore on August 9th, 494.
