In the Lucianus, the Oracle is the apostle of the Goddess. The Oracle is a girl endowed with the Gift, granting her the ability to read the Legacies—a divine record of all knowledge in existence.
Oracles tend to have very short life expectancies. No one knows why, but it is commonly understood that the Gift exacts a heavy toll from her, killing her in a matter of years. As such, Oracles come and go, on average, every 8 years. Whenever one dies, the Sanctuary embarks on an international manhunt for the next one.
Entire wars have been fought over girls believed to be the next Oracle.
