In the Forgotten Realms, Mystryl (I pronounce this like "minstrel" without the N) was the first goddess of magic. She was a primeval goddess born of Selûne and Shar at the dawn of the world.
Mystryl sacrificed herself during the fall of Netheril. Long story short, a wizard named Karsus took his gigantic magical shlong and fucked a massive hole in the Weave—the source of all arcane magic in the FR—and Mystryl basically had to burn away almost all of her essence in order to restore it. There was almost nothing left of her afterwards. She just barely had enough juice in her to reincarnate on Toril. She was reborn a mortal peasant girl named Mystra, and eventually returned to power as goddess of magic.
Alignment
Mystryl was Chaotic Neutral.
