In Faerûn, Shar, the Lady of Loss, is the great goddess of darkness. She is the twin sister of Selûne.
Shar is possibly the greatest force of evil in the Forgotten Realms. She's one of the big three villains of the setting, alongside Bane and Cyric—but she's arguably on a different level entirely and probably qualifies as the setting's overarching antagonist.
She's quite the big deal. She uses gods like Cyric and Myrkul to fetch her coffee in the morning.
It is said that Shar can see all things which happen in darkness, though this may just be folk superstition.
Alignment
Shar is accused of being Neutral Evil.
History
According to legend, Shar and Selûne were the first two beings Ao created. It is said that many of the ancient Faerûnian gods originate from Shar and Selûne, such as Sune, Tempus, and Mystryl.
Worship
Perhaps the greatest draw to the worship of Shar is that Shar can make individuals forget past trauma. Many of her worshipers are victims of great crimes, who seek Shar out to wipe their memories clean of their pain. Despite the efforts of the clergies of Lathander, Mystra, and Selûne to quell the rise of Shar-worship, the number of her worshipers increases every year.
Relationships
Shar is the sister and eternal enemy of Selûne. They've been engulfed in a cosmic war for eons. Shar also diametrically opposes all deities of light. Shar gets along well with Talona and the drow god Vhaeraun.
The creation of the Shadow Weave instigated a war between Shar and Mystra.
Shar has used Cyric as a pawn in the past.
