The Vaati[1] (I say "VAH-tee" or "VAH-dee") are a group of ancient immortal beings hailing from the Elemental Planes.
The Vaati are actually pretty chill guys. They used to control a vast interplanar empire, but their empire was much like the Inca—it was legitimately a peaceful trading empire. They didn't violently conquer or forcefully incorporate foreign peoples, which makes them WAY better than almost any of the other big ancient empires, like that of the mind flayers, dragons, giants, sarrukh, yuan-ti, or aboleths.
