The Vaati[1] (I say "VAW-dee"), more commonly known as the Wind Dukes of Aaqa (I say "uh-KAW") or simply the Wind Dukes, are a group of ancient immortal beings hailing from the Elemental Planes. They lean highly Lawful in their alignment.
The Vaati are actually really chill guys. They used to control a vast interplanar empire, but their empire was much more like the Inca than anything else—it was legitimately a peaceful trading empire. They didn't violently conquer or forcefully incorporate foreign peoples, which makes them WAY better than almost any of the other big ancient empires, like that of the mind flayers, dragons, giants, sarrukh, yuan-ti, or aboleths.
The Vaati civilization was annihilated during the Dawn War. After the celestial civil war broke out and Miska the Wolf-Spider marched on the heavens at the head of a unified army of tanar'ri and obyriths, the Vaati intervened in the war and sacrificed everything they had to stop the forces of Chaos and Evil from destroying the Upper Planes. They constructed the Rod of Law and eradicated Miska with a single stroke—but the battle cost them everything, and even now, all these thousands of years later, their people have still not recovered.
