Alignment

From Marillia

Alignment is a key aspect of D&D and Pathfinder. It refers to a generalized universal moral system mapped onto two moral axes: Good-Evil, and Law-Chaos.

I'm sure you're expecting me to explain what it means to be Good and Evil, but I'd like to remind you that people have debated their meanings for literally thousands of years and so I really don't know if I can give you a one-sentence answer. I could give you my understanding of Good and Evil, but it would be precisely that: my understanding. You would almost certainly disagree.

Anywho, the moral landscape of the alignment system looks like that grid below. The two axes map 9 moral persuasions.

Alignment
Lawful Neutral Chaotic
Good Lawful Good Neutral Good Chaotic Good
Neutral Lawful Neutral True Neutral Chaotic Neutral
Evil Lawful Evil Neutral Evil Chaotic Evil
